It estimates what a shipment costs by finding the billable weight of your package and applying your own carrier rate, plus handling, insurance, and any surcharges. It does not connect to a carrier, so you stay in control of the rate.

Dimensional (or volumetric) weight reflects how much space a package takes up rather than how heavy it is. It is calculated from the package dimensions and a divisor set by the carrier.

Billable weight is the greater of the actual (scale) weight and the dimensional weight. Carriers charge on whichever is larger, which is why a light but bulky box can cost more than its scale weight suggests.

Multiply length × width × height and divide by the DIM divisor. For example, in inches with a divisor of 139 you get pounds; in centimetres with a divisor of 5000 you get kilograms. This tool lets you set the divisor to match your carrier.

It depends on the carrier and service. Common values are 139 for inches/pounds and 5000 for centimetres/kilograms, but check your carrier's current figure — the field is editable so you can enter the exact divisor from your rate agreement.

Vehicle and container space is limited. Charging by dimensional weight ensures large, light packages pay for the space they occupy, not just their scale weight.
